erotica (n.)

meaning “works of art or literature on erotic subjects, or of an erotic character,” was originally a Greek plural, but in English today it is sometimes construed as a mass noun taking a singular verb, as in This erotica is now legally publishable. It also regularly takes a plural verb when erotica is clearly construed as plural, as in These ancient erotica were long considered modern forgeries. Both patterns are Standard today, but Edited English usually insists on a plural verb. See FOREIGN PLURALS.  1
