LIGATURES

In writing and printing, a ligature is a character composed of two letters joined together; these can occur in American English today, but very rarely: æ, œ. Ligature is also the name given to the line used to join two letters together, as in the character some dictionaries use to indicate the pronunciation of voiced th (th) in thy. See also DIGRAPHS; DIPHTHONG.  1
