throng (v.), thronged (adj.)

The verb is both transitive, as in The students thronged the square, and intransitive, when it frequently combines with the prepositions to or toward(s), as in The bystanders thronged to [toward(s)] the bandstand. In the passive voice, thronged combines with by and with to indicate who did the thronging, as in The streets were thronged by [with] demonstrators.  1
