REFERENT
 
 
is the linguist’s term for the idea, object, person, or other entity that lies behind a word or locution. Sailfish has for Americans at least two referents: that large game fish itself and the small sailboard (actually, its trademark name) that dots our lakes, rivers, and harbors in warm weather.  1
