Words and meanings frequently employed by speakers and writers of good reputation tend to become Standard; so it is with pronunciations, spellings, and grammatical matters too. The circumstances or contexts in which we encounter them and the frequency of those encounters are the primary determiners of appropriateness in language usage, as well as in other manners.  1
