is a term used in at least two ways in English grammar: (1) it may be either a prefix or suffix, such as those used to change a word from one part of speech to another, as in adding en- to rich to form enrich (adjective to verb) and -able to predict to form predictable (verb to adjective); or (2) it may be any of certain types of function words, such as determiners or prepositions, which usually have unchanging forms and perform functional grammatical duties such as identifying following nouns (determiners), as in an age, or identifying and governing modifiers such as prepositional phrases (prepositions), as in seen by candlelight.  1
