| In sports and in the law, these persons have similar tasks. The referee in boxing or basketball interprets and enforces the rules, stops play and restarts it when necessary, and assigns penalties when these are called for under the rules. The umpire has similar responsibilities in baseball. Wherever officials bear one of these titles, we understand them to be disinterested third parties, prepared to maintain order, examine the evidence, and give judgments. | 1 |
