PARTICIPIAL ADJECTIVES

are the present or past participles of verbs, used adjectivally. To part is a verb, and parting, its present participle, is used as a participial adjective in the expression a parting shot; the past participle, parted, is a participial adjective in a severely parted hairstyle. Participial adjectives are another sort of functional shift.  1
