Chicano (adj., n.)

This word, first printed in the 1950s, is a form of Mexicano, as pronounced and apparently first used by Mexican-Americans of themselves. It may for a time have been used derisively by others as well, but it now appears to be a widely accepted nonpejorative Standard name for members of this ethnic group. The plural is Chicanos, and the female form is Chicana (plural: Chicanas).  1
