Saint(e), St(e).

Place names (St. Petersburg, St. Paul) usually abbreviate saint, and the saints themselves frequently but not always are spelled out (Saint Agnes or St. Agnes; Saint Paul or St. Paul). There are many exceptions, even in place names: it’s Saint John, New Brunswick, but St. John’s, Newfoundland; it’s Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on the St. Mary’s River. Sainte (Ste.) is the French feminine form.  1
