Kenneth G. Wilson (1923). The Columbia Guide to Standard American English. 1993.
burgeon (v.), burgeoning (adj.)
Burgeon began by meaning to send forth buds and sprouts, but it has long since generalized to mean to grow, to expand, and simply to flourish. Bourgeoning too has generalized, although some commentators have discouraged the semantic change. Both words are Standard in the original and expanded senses.
