youngster (n.)

has as referent a young person in an age range from child to the relative “younger than I am,” as in the oldster’s remark, Why, he’s only seventy—a mere youngster. This Standard term may have a rather old-fashioned air about it today; the kids seems to have replaced the youngsters as many parents’ way of referring to their children, whatever their ages. See KID.  1
