envoy 1, envoi (n.)

Envoy has a variant spelling, envoi, reflecting its medieval French origin; it means “the concluding, often dedicatory, remarks at the end of a book or other literary work,” and it is also the technical name for the brief (usually four-line) summary or dedicatory stanza at the end of a French poem called a ballade. See BALLAD; FOREIGN PHRASES.  1
