is of course Standard in its uses referring to that physical science, but it is also Standard in figurative uses referring to relationships among members of groups or sexual attractions between individuals. In addition, many of chemistry’s technical terms have taken on figurative meanings in the general vocabulary (see, e.g., ACID TEST; CATALYST).  1
