Honorable (adj.)

Though more used in Britain than in the United States, this honorific continues to have a certain vogue among Americans, especially in political life. This last point may account for the term’s frequent use ironically, sarcastically, pejoratively. Abbreviated as Hon., it is usually used with the: The Hon.[orable] John J. Jones. See ABBREVIATIONS; REVEREND.  1
