ageism (n.)
 
 
is a relatively new word, meaning “prejudice against the elderly.” It was created on analogy with words like racism and sexism, but it has not had the vogue of those and is much criticized by language conservatives who object to the proliferation of such -isms and consider this one jargon at best.  1
