bulimia (n.), bulimic (adj.)

Pronounced b(y)oo-LIM-ee-uh or b(y)oo-LEEM-ee-uh, bulimia, along with other dietary disorders found especially in young women, has received considerable media attention in recent years. Also called bulimia nervosa and bulimarexia, it means “an insatiable appetite” and especially “a syndrome involving binge eating and vomiting,” usually exhibiting cycles of severe dieting or other guilt-driven efforts to undo the effects of enormous eating binges. Note the spelling: There is only one l and the medial vowel is -i-. The infrequent adjective is bulimic. Compare ANOREXIA.  1
