par excellence
 
 
is a French phrase, a cliché in English meaning literally “by way of excellence” and figuratively (the sense in which we use it most often) “the highest form of excellence,” “absolutely the best.” Incomparable, splendid, superb, or preeminent will substitute nicely if you’re cutting down on foreign phrases.  1
