parenting (n.)
 
 
is a word only a generation old meaning “whatever skills and luck it takes to have and rear children” and “the process of being (a) parent(s).” It is unquestionably Standard, but you should be aware that some conservatives still consider it unnecessary sociological jargon (see JARGON).  1
