(pronounced puhr-EN-thuh-sis) uses only its foreign plural, parentheses (pronounced puhr-EN-thuh-SEEZ), in English. It has two main meanings: “explanatory or additional material not necessary to the main sentence, an aside” and a mark of punctuation, used in pairs. See PARENTHESES.  1
