In combined use, characteristic is usually followed by the preposition of, as in Pontification is characteristic of emeritus professors, but in, for, and about also occur in Standard English: Severe pain is characteristic in cases of gout. Insomnia is characteristic for people your age. What’s characteristic about her is her energy.  1
