| en route (adv., adj.) |
| |
| |
| is a French phrase, meaning on the way (to) or along the way, that is now fully anglicized. We usually print it as two words, although one-word versions do occur, and we pronounce it en ROOT, ahn ROOT, or in the nasalized French way, awng ROOT. Its usage problems include the careless spelling of the en as on, to match one of its English pronunciations, and the spelling of the phrase as one word: Edited English approves neither of these. Also to be avoided as Substandard is the pronunciation of this use of route to rhyme with out. See FOREIGN PHRASES. | 1 |
