substantial, substantive (adjs.)
 
 
These two words both mean “having substance, real, firm, solidly constructed.” But substantial also means “ample, enough to sustain,” and “prosperous, wealthy, and considerable in importance,” and substantive also means “independent, not subordinate,” “directly bearing on the matter,” and “essential, actual.”  1
