American English usually uses the spellings with an i; British English uses both forms about equally. Inquire occurs with about, after, and concerning, as in She inquired about [after, concerning] his mothers health, and with into, for, and as to, as in He inquires every week into [for, as to] any new developments in the case. All these combinations specify the object of the inquiry. Of and from also combine with inquire, the combination specifying to whom or to what agency the inquiry is directed, as in She inquired of [from] his employer.
