| In proper names, the three spellings of the Romance language word meaning of are sometimes capitalized, sometimes not, usually according to convention or the wishes of the bearer of that name: Hernando de Soto, Roger Martin Du Gard, Walter De la Mare, Gabriele DAnnunzio, Charles de Gaulle, Giuseppe di Stefano. Lowercase particles of this sort (the de in de Gaulle) are capitalized when they begin a new sentence. See also VAN (3). | 1 |
