broach, brooch (nn.)

A broach is a pointed tool, a skewer, a spit, or the like, used for piercing. A brooch is a piece of jewelry, worn at or near the neck, and so named because it has a pointed pin and lock as a clasp. Both come from the same root, the Middle English broche, “pointed tool.” Broach is always pronounced BROCH, brooch either BROCH or BROOCH.  1
