War of Devolution (See 1667–68) over the claims to the Spanish royal family's personal estates. Louis XIV claimed these estates as part of his wife's inheritance.
“Peace of Church” allowed Jansenism to spread (See The Papacy). Named after Cornelius Jansen (1583–1638), the Jansenists adhered to doctrines similar to Calvinism. They believed all but the few touched by the grace of God were damned. Jansenism centered on Port Royal and its convent. They were declared heretical by the pope in 1653, but with the assistance of Blaise Pascal, the pope agreed to allow Jansenists to continue within the Church (1669).
Le Tellier tightened state control of army, improved direct payment of troops. Under le Tellier and his son and successor, Louvois, France established better inspection and discipline of troops (Martinet served as first inspector-general), standardized uniforms and regimental organization, and began to introduce military pensions and hospitals. Provision of supplies also improved. Other countries paralleled or imitated these reforms.
