AFONSO III, the brother of Sancho II and count of Boulogne; offered the crown by the pope. His title being weak, Afonso was muchdependent on the cortes (1254) in which the commoners were for the first time represented. War with Castile was ended by a peace in 1253. (See Portugal)  1
