Beginning of Soweto uprising. Initiated by African high school students' objections to the use of the Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction, the movement spread in a wave of discontent and violent repression throughout the country, resulting in 700 deaths and the flight of thousands of youths across borders and into the military camps of liberation movements.
