UNITA's Jonas Savimbi rejected the results of the Angolan election, in which he trailed the MPLA's Eduardo dos Santos, leading to a renewed civil war 16 months after the signing of the peace accord.	1

1993

Up to 1,000 people per day were dying in the civil war between UNITA and the government forces; UNITA held most of the territory.	2

1994

Angola's petroleum output was 560,000 barrels per day. It was expected to rise to 780,000 barrels per day in 1998. The major portion was exported to the United States.	3

Nov. 20

The Angolan government signed a peace treaty with the rebel group UNITA, ending 19 years of civil wars and giving UNITA some governmental power.	4
