The Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) was founded by Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to reduce dependence on South Africa. In the struggle against white supremacy in South Africa, these states called themselves the Frontline States because of their proximity to South Africa.	2

1981–87

South Africa repeatedly intervened in support of UNITA, culminating in major battles at the end of 1987.	3

1988, Jan

South African forces failed to capture the town of Cuito Cuanavale, defended by combined Angolan and Cuban forces.	4

Dec. 22

Angola, Cuba, and South Africa agreed to the withdrawal of foreign troops (including 50,000 Cuban troops) from Angola and independence for Namibia.	5
