John Vladislav, who continued the war but was killed in a battle near Dyrrhacium. He left only young sons. The Bulgar leaders thereupon decided to submit. Bulgaria was incorporated into the Byzantine Empire (themes of Bulgaria and Paristrium); the patriarchate was abolished, but the archbishop of Okhrid retained practical autonomy.
