After elections were held, a national assembly was convened.  1

NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM WERE PEACEFULLY REUNITED, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was born. The postliberation government began to rebuild the wartorn country, collectivize agriculture, and institute a five-year economic plan.  2
