Prime Minister Obuchi suffered a stroke and was replaced two days later by LDP leader Mori Yoshiro. Obuchi died on May 14.  1

In parliamentary elections the LDP and its allies held a reduced majority in the lower house by successfully forming a coalition government with two other parties, New Komeit and the Conservatives.  2
