After several cabinet shifts since Jan. 1959, a military coup, led by Capt. Kong Le, ousted the current pro-Western government. On Aug. 15 the king asked Prince Souvanna Phouma to form a new government.
Civil strife over the composition of the government involved the Communist Pathet Lao, the neutralists around Prince Souvanna Phouma, and anti-Communists under Prince Boun Oum and Gen. Nosavan.
After defeating Kong Le, Gen. Nosavan installed a pro-Western government under Prince Boun Oum; Souvanna Phouma had fled into exile in Cambodia (Dec. 9), and Kong Le joined the Pathet Lao. War with the Pathet Lao continued.
