A national referendum was called by Zia to seek popular approval for a five-year term and to ensure the process of Islamization. The 11-party opposition urged a boycott; the results claimed a 64 percent turnout and a 97.7 percent confirmation of Zia as president.  1
 
1985, Feb. 25–28
 
National and provincial elections were held on a nonparty basis. Public meetings and processions were forbidden, and the press was monitored closely.  2
 
March
 
The National Assembly elected Fakhr Imam as speaker, defeating the government-backed candidate.  3
 
Dec
 
Martial law and the state of emergency (continuously in effect from March 1969) were finally lifted. Fundamental rights were restored.  4
