1956, March 2

Formal French recognition of MOROCCAN INDEPENDENCE. Spain withdrew from its portion of Morocco on April 7 and recognized the unity of the Moroccan state. The international administration of Tangier was dismantled on Oct. 29.	1

1958, May 1

Morocco joined the Arab League.	2

1961, Feb. 26

Death of Muhammad V, who was succeeded by his son, HASSAN II.	3

1962, Nov. 18

Promulgation of a new constitution. Morocco received a bicameral legislature and a prime minister who was responsible to the king.	4

1963, Oct.–Nov

Skirmishes along the frontier between Morocco and Algeria.	5

1965, June 7

Amid widespread disturbances, Hassan II suspended the constitution and declared a state of emergency. The king governed by decree up to July 1967 and then through his appointees to the cabinet until the unveiling of the new constitution in 1970.	6

Oct. 29

Assassination of exiled opposition leader Mehdi Ben Barka in Paris, presumably on orders from the Moroccan government.	7
