Formation of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus in the northern part of the island. The Turkish minority proposed to link it to the Greek portion of the island by federation. A constitution was approved (June 8), and Rauf Denkta was elected president (June 20, 1976).
The Turkish Cypriot state unilaterally declared itself independent and became the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. Turkey was the only country to recognize the new state and exchange ambassadors with it. The U.N. Security Council issued a condemnation (May 11, 1984).
The Turkish government rejected aUNproposal to reunite Cyprus despite Greek Cypriot approval (June 12) because it had not been consulted earlier. The UN presented a second plan (June 11, 1986), but this time it was scotched by the Greek Cypriots.
