Founding of the National Action Party(NAP), a reorganized version of the Republican Peasants Nation Party. The party drew its support from hard-line conservatives and espoused a mixture of Islam and Turkish nationalism. Alparslan Türke, a former military officer, was the dominant figure and organized the party in a manner resembling the Fascist groups of the 1930s. Attached to the party were paramilitary squads known as the Gray Wolves. The NAP never achieved widespread popularity (it received no more than 3 percent of the vote in 1969) and was confined almost entirely to the large cities.
