Prime Minister Cheddi Jagan of Guyana, founder and leader of the People's Progressive Party and a major figure in Guyanese politics since the 1950s, died. In subsequent elections (Dec. 15) his widow, Janet Jagan, was elected to succeed him.
Prime minister of Bermuda, David Saul, unexpectedly resigned. The ruling United Bermuda Party elected Pamela Gordon as his replacement, making her the first woman to serve as Bermuda's political leader.
The ruling People's National Party of Jamaica won 49 of 60 seats in parliamentary elections; victory gave the PNP control of the government for an unprecedented third term.
