Elections for the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies resulted in heavy majorities for the PRD. The death of party leader José Peña Gómez one week before the vote was seen to have benefited the PRD during the election.
Dominican Revolutionary Party candidate Hipolito Mejía was elected president. The Center-Left politician was sworn in during August. He faced substantial public dissatisfaction with the government over recent privatization of the electric industry in the Dominican Republic.
