A council of state was inaugurated, which pledged to restore civil liberties.	1

The OAS removed sanctions imposed in Aug. 1960. The U.S. resumed diplomatic ties with the country on Jan. 6.	2

Jan. 18

A military countercoup deposed the military junta that had overthrown the ruling council of state on Jan. 16. The council was reinstated, and V.P. Rafael Bonnelly was appointed president.	3

JUAN BOSCH GAVINO (b. 1909) was elected president.	4
