Citing Costa Rica's efforts at debt reduction, the IMF agreed to a new financial package, with disbursements of $119 million.	1

The trade ministers of the Western Hemisphere met in San José, Costa Rica, to discuss the development of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).	4

Costa Rica was elected as one of five new nonpermanent members on the UN Security Council.	5
