Bouterse named a new cabinet headed by Errol Alibux, a Marxist political leader.	1

Martial law was reimposed because of widespread guerrilla activity. The insurgent Surinamese Liberation Army (SLA), led by Ronnie Brunswijk, called for democracy, respect for human rights, and development of the interior.	2

1987, Sept. 30

A new constitution created a five-year presidency and council of ministers, both to be chosen by an elected National Assembly.	3

Nov. 25

The opposition Front for Democracy and Development (FDD) won by a landslide in the first elections since the military takeover.	4
