Fearing social revolution, the government launched a heavily publicized but insubstantial land reform. The reform coincided with new military efforts, with U.S. aid, to eradicate guerrilla movements in the countryside.
Founding of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia(FARC). This organization, along with others such as the National Liberation Army(ELN) and the April 19 Movement (M-19), had ties to the peasant mobilizations of the 1950s and continued to grow despite repeated efforts at suppression.
