Enrique Hertzog, leader of the Republican Socialist Union Party, was elected president. Several attempts by the MNR to overthrow the government were unsuccessful.
A strike in the tin mines in May and a rebellion by the outlawed MNR in September were put down by the army, but they left the country on the verge of bankruptcy.
