Former Chilean president Augusto Pinochet was stripped of immunity and faced charges in Argentina, Chile, and Spain for war crimes committed under the Argentine military junta between 1976 and 1983 (See Aug. 8).
A political scandal emerged surrounding a labor-reform bill that had passed with an overwhelming majority as part of President Fernando de la Rua's plan to rescue Argentina's ailing economy. Eleven senators were implicated in vote-buying activities.
