Serious border clashes between Soviet and Communist Chinese troops on the Ussuri River raised the possibility of a major conflict (See 1969, March–June).
Conference of Communist Parties held in Moscow, with 75 parties represented. The chief subject of debate was the deepening division of the Communist world, but in the end the conference refused to condemn and outlaw Communist China. The conference revealed much criticism of the Soviet action in Czechoslovakia.
