The ruling National Salvation Front (mostly made up of former Communists) split when the NSF22 December Group (supporting President Iliescu) elected a national council and described itself as a social-democratic party.
The second general election since 1989 took place. The Democratic Convention of Romania (DCR), a Center-Right coalition, did well in urban areas, and the Democratic National Salvation Front (DNSF), the party of incumbent president Iliescu, did well in rural areas.
