Turkish foreign minister Isma`il Cem and Greek foreign minister George Papandreou met in Ankara, Turkey; talks ended with an accord for economic cooperation and promises of peace in Cyprus. This summit marked the first visit by a Greek foreign minister to Turkey in 38 years.
The PASOK Party became the first Greek party to win a majority in three consecutive legislative elections, taking 158 seats in the Parliament. This was Greece's closest parliamentary election to date, inasmuch as PASOK's main rival, the New Democracy Party, won 125 seats. PASOK leader Costas Simitas was reinstalled as prime minister.
